LESSON 20

Proverbs and Adages

A rolling stone gathers no moss.

A stitch in time saves nine.

Beggars can't be choosers.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Two heads are better than one.

You can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Which of the proverbs above matches this scenario:

A mother calls her daughter to come over. "You have a little tear in your dress. Let me mend it for you now or I will have a much bigger job tomorrow."

Chat about the above proverbs with somebody at home and see if you can figure out what they mean and when you might say it.

Choice task:

Do a mini drama to show one of the proverbs and what they mean. Have somebody guess which one it is.
or
Illustrate a scenario to show one of the proverbs and what it means.

Give the two aliens names and then write the dialogue, or the conversation that the two aliens have. Don't forget the quotation marks!

LESSON 16
Synonyms
Synonyms are words that have the same meaning.
It is useful to learn about synonyms so that you aren't using the same words all the time.

Take a look at this synonym web for the word 'said'
source: oise.utoronto.ca

Now make your own
Synonym Spider Web
for the following words:

Went
big
Good
small
Bad
happy
sad

LESSON 15

A Riddle!

My skin is rough and orange,
Not always easy to peel.
I am round like a tennis ball,
but not really like a wheel.
My insides are juicy,
be careful not to squeeze,
All my fantastic Vitamin C
Should keep you from a sneeze!
What am I?

Now create your own riddles!
Pick an object. Without giving away
too many obvious clues, describe how it feels, looks, sounds, smells, tastes and feels. You could describe
what it is used for, or where you might find this object.
If you are up for the challenge, try making your riddle rhyme!
Then find somebody and see if they can crack your riddle! :)

LESSON 14

Welcome back!
I hope you enjoyed your Easter break! 😎

So... can you remember what a verb is?

Clue: The verb is missing in each of these sentences:

I ..... to the bus as fast as I could when I was late.

I .... eggs and toast for my breakfast.

I love to .... Minecraft with my friends.

Have you worked it out?
The missing words are: ran, ate and play.
These are called VERBS.
Verbs are doing words or action words.

Challenges with a partner:
  • Write down as many verbs as you can in 30 seconds.
  • Play 'Verb Tennis' - Pass a 'verb' to each other back and forth. If one person can't think of a verb in 5 seconds they're out. No repeats of words!
  • Play Simon Says using interesting verbs like 'Simon says recycle your rubbish!'
  • 'Simon says iron your clothes.'
  • 'Simon says collect seashells at the beach.'

LESSON 13

Now you will read another shape poem about Rain and then
create your own one about Ice-cream.

LESSON 8

Calligrams

Here are some examples, see if you can figure out

what a calligram is.

A calligram is a poem, phrase or word where the writing is arranged in a way that shows the meaning of the word.

Try create a calligram for the words:
wind
curly
fluffy
clock
star

Now can you think of some of your own? Have fun. :)

LESSON 7

Today's skill is called...
Making inferences.

Sometimes authors give us
clues and we have to fill in the gaps, or work out what is happening based on the evidence or clues.

INFERRING is a bit like detective work!

I had finally gotten used to no gravity. It was cool floating by the window to see the planet Earth below.
WHO AM I?

I like to work outdoors early in the morning when the light is good. I make sure all of my brushes are clean and then take out my canvas.
WHO AM I?

It's always very quiet where I work. I organise the books in alphabetical order according to the author's name.
WHO AM I?

Now try making up your own. Write three clues and ask someone to guess or infer who you are.

LESSON 6

Penpal Letters
Read the letter that Juan sent to Liam.
Then click on the link to answer some
questions and learn how to write your
own penpal letter. Have fun. :)

LESSON 5

Madlibs are a lot of fun and always make me laugh!
Without showing your partner the story ask them to make a list of:
  • a plural noun    eg. trees
  • an adjective     eg. purple
  • noun:animal    eg. mouse
  • adjective + noun: animal    eg. tiny pony
  • adjective + noun: animal
  • ... continue like this for all the different blank spaces.
  • When your friend has finished give them the story and fill in the blanks. :)

LESSON 4

After reading the poem we are going to explore the skill called:

Creating Images

This is what poets and authors do to help the readers to imagine what they are writing about.

Get a paper and write down the  senses in 5 columns like this:
Now fill it in based on the poem about Spring and why not add a few of your own ideas of other things you can see, hear, smell, taste and feel in Spring time!

LESSON 3
Today you will be an author!

Invent your own story!
Remember a story must have
a beginning,
middle and
end.
Normally there is a main character, who has a problem. The character goes through lots of obstacles and challenges before the end and we find out if they solved the problem.

But the catch is...

Your story must include two of the following:

an unusual key                  a mysterious note

a secret room                    a sudden thunderstorm

a wise old lady/man            an eccentric inventor

a journey/trip                     a message or lesson

LESSON 2

So today we will look at a famous
scientist and inventor!

Read all about this mystery inventor and then see if you can answer the questions here:

Have fun!!

LESSON 1Wednesday March 18th

Fun Facts

Have fun! And don't forget to add a picture or diagram :)
